NOAA Fisheries: 2023 Monkfish Research Set-Aside Program Call for Proposals

The following was released by NOAA Fisheries:

NOAA Fisheries, in coordination with the New England and Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Councils, is soliciting monkfish research proposals for the 2023-2024 Monkfish Research Set-Aside (RSA) Program. Interested applicants should note that the solicitation period for this competition is 30 days.

Successful applicants are awarded monkfish days-at-sea that have been “set aside” to pay for research expenses; no federal funds are provided. Researchers and fishermen partner to use the days-at-sea and the proceeds are used to fund the research and compensate fishing industry partners. Prospective applicants should understand how funds are generated under RSA programs, and be prepared to invest substantial time and effort working with the monkfish fishing industry in the use of monkfish RSA days-at-sea.

The RSA programs are designed to inform resource management decisions and improve stock assessments. Proposals are evaluated for scientific merit and for relevance to monkfish fishery management. The Councils develop the research priorities, and NOAA Fisheries administers the competition, oversees awarded projects, and oversees set-aside harvest activities.
