Joint Meeting of the MAFMC and ASMFC Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Advisory Panels (Webinar)

The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council’s Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Advisory Panel will meet jointly with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Advisory Panel on Thursday, November 19, 2020, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The meeting will be held via webinar.

The purpose of this meeting is to review public comments on the Council’s Black Sea Bass Commercial State Allocation Amendment the Commission’s Draft Addendum XXXIII and, as well as to provide recommendations for final action on the addendum and amendment. The amendment and draft addendum consider alternative approaches for allocating the coastwide black sea bass commercial quota among the states as well as Council management of state allocations and changes to certain federal regulations regarding quota management.

Joint Meeting of the Ecosystem and Ocean Planning Advisory Panel and Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Advisory Panel

The Council’s Ecosystem and Ocean Planning (EOP) Advisory Panel and Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Advisory Panel will meet jointly with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s (ASMFC) Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Advisory Panel on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, from 9:00 A.M. through 12:00 P.M. The meeting will take place over webinar with a telephone-only connection option.

The purpose of the meeting is to introduce advisory panel members to goals, process, and expectations associated with conducting a management strategy evaluation (MSE). Later this year, the Council will begin conducting an MSE as part of its Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) structured decision framework that will evaluate the biological and economic benefits of management alternatives to minimize discards in the recreational summer flounder fishery. Advisory panel members will listen to a series of background presentations on the EAFM process and an introduction to MSE and will then participate in a mock MSE stakeholder workshop using an example recreational issue to solicit feedback and input on management objectives.

The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council's Bluefish Advisory Panel will meet jointly via webinar with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Bluefish Advisory Panel. The purpose of this meeting is for the Advisory Panel to develop a fishery performance report (FPR) and comment on draft alternatives for the Bluefish Allocation and Rebuilding Amendment. The intent of the FPR is to facilitate a venue for structured input from the Advisory Panel for the bluefish specifications process. The FPR will be used by the MAFMC’s Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC) and the Bluefish Monitoring Committee (MC) when reviewing 2021 management measures designed to achieve the recommended bluefish catch and landings limits.

Joint Advisory Panel Meeting on Data Portals

The Mid-Atlantic Council’s Advisory Panels (APs) will meet jointly on Friday, June 5 from 9:30 to 11:00 am. The purpose of this meeting is for AP members to develop recommendations on how the fisheries they participate in could be displayed on the Mid-Atlantic Data Portal and the Northeast Ocean Data Portal. The data portals are used for a number of purposes, including planning, analysis, and outreach related to fisheries management, aquaculture, dredging, offshore energy development, and research. AP input provided during this webinar will support a joint project between the Northeast Regional Ocean Council (NROC), the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council on the Ocean (MARCO), and the Responsible Offshore Development Alliance (RODA) to update and improve the data portals. Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council staff will host this meeting and NROC, MARCO, and RODA staff will present and facilitate the discussion.
