Joint Meeting of the MAFMC and ASMFC Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Advisory Panels (Webinar)

The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council's Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Advisory Panel will hold a public meeting via webinar, jointly with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Advisory Panel.

The meeting will be held on Monday, November 20, 2017 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 p.m.

Webinar: Ecosystem and Ocean Planning (EOP) Committee with Advisory Panel (AP)

The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council's (MAFMC) Ecosystem and Ocean Planning (EOP) Committee with Advisory Panel (AP) will hold a public meeting on Friday, October 6, 2017.  The meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m. and conclude no later than 3:00 p.m.   The meeting will be held via webinar with a telephone-only connection option.

The purpose of the meeting is to review the final list of risk elements to be evaluated by the Council as part of its Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management. At this meeting, the EOP Committee and Advisors will provide final rankings of the risk elements that will be communicated to the full Council at its October meeting in Riverhead, NY. Once adopted, the prioritized risk matrix will be used by the Council to inform its future work and scientific research plans.

The meeting will be held on Friday, July 28, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

The purpose of this meeting is for the Advisory Panels to review and comment on recent stock assessment information, as well as the reports and recommendations of the Council’s Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC) and the Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Monitoring Committee regarding previously implemented fishery specifications (i.e., catch and landings limits and management measures) for 2018 for all three species and possible scup specifications for 2019. The Council and ASMFC will consider input from the AP in August when reviewing these specifications.

The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council’s Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Advisory Panel (AP) will meet jointly with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's (ASMFC’s) Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass AP on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Double Tree by Hilton Baltimore –BWI Airport, 890 Elkridge Landing Road, Linthicum, Maryland, 21090; telephone: (410)-859-8400.

The purpose of this meeting is to discuss recent performance of the commercial and recreational fisheries for summer flounder, scup, and black sea bass, and develop annual Fishery Performance Reports for these fisheries. The Council and the ASMFC will consider the Fishery Performance Reports later in 2017 when reviewing previously implemented 2018 fishery specifications (i.e., catch and landings limits and management measures) for all three species, and possibly recommending 2019 specifications for scup. The AP will also discuss commercial summer flounder management alternatives under development for the Council and ASMFC’s ongoing Comprehensive Summer Flounder Amendment.

Joint MAFMC and ASMFC Bluefish Advisory Panel Meeting (Webinar)

The Council and ASMFC will hold a joint bluefish advisory panel meeting on Tuesday, June 27, 2017, from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. The meeting will be held via webinar with a telephone-only connection option.

The purpose of this meeting is to discuss recent performance of the commercial and recreational fisheries for Atlantic bluefish. The MAFMC and ASMFC staff will work with advisors to develop the 2017 Fishery Performance Report (FPR). Bluefish performance reports for prior years can be found on this page. The intent of this report is to facilitate a venue for structured input from the AP members for the Atlantic Bluefish specifications process. The FPR will be used by the Council, its Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC) and the Atlantic Bluefish Monitoring Committee (MC), when reviewing (at future meetings), and if necessary revising, the current measures designed to achieve the recommended Atlantic Bluefish catch and landings limits for 2018. The MAFMC and the ASMFC will consider the Fishery Performance Report in August when reviewing fishery specifications (i.e. catch and landings limits and management measures) for 2018.

The River Herring and Shad (RH/S) Advisory Panel will meet on Friday, April 7 at 1:00 p.m. The RH/S Committee is developing metrics for tracking RH/S progress at the Council, and there are plans to review draft criteria at the April Council meeting.  This meeting would seek AP input on those draft criteria (in development).  Draft criteria can be found in the April 2017 Council Meeting Briefing Book:

The purpose of this meeting is to review and comment on the recently approved stock assessment information for black sea bass, as well as the reports and recommendations of the Council’s Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC) and the Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Monitoring Committee regarding black sea bass fishery specifications (i.e., catch and landings limits and management measures) for 2017-2019.  The Advisory Panel will also be asked to provide comments and recommendations on recreational management measures (possession limits, size limits, and season) for 2017. The Council and ASMFC will consider input from the AP at their joint meeting in February when reviewing these specifications.
